Following a period of uncertainty and lack of serious updates the developers of Early Access zombie MMO, Lifeless, have surprised many of their community with a shock announcement made this weekend. Rigid-Soft Studios addressed the concerns of the Lifeless player base with a new forum post from Creative Director Hampus, informing them that the developers have begun a massive undertaking with an upcoming transition to a brand new engine.
Lifeless currently utilizes the popular but graphically limited Unity engine, an engine used by many budding developers but something the AAA crowd tend to avoid. The plans to re-launch the game under the vastly superior Unreal engine has been welcomed by a hugely positive response from the community – partially due to no additional costs or surprised purchases for those that have already adopted into the Early Access period.
In the post Hampus lays out the reasons for the change, promising players that a more polished and feature rich Lifeless will be made possible thanks to the change. The post also includes some concept images of the new version, showcasing a unique cell-shading inspired graphical approach that we rarely see in the MMO genre.
