Battlestar Galactica is a free massively multiplayer online role-playing game (online MMORPG) that is, unsurprisingly, modeled after the popular Battlestar Galactica television show. This Battlestar Galactica review is designed to help you decide whether or not this is one of the free MMORPGs for you or not.
Overview
Battlestar Galactica Online throws you right into the action you love from the popular, multiple-incarnation television show – tasking you with commandeering the cockpit of your very own spaceship as either a Human or Cylon. Containing incredibly intense spaceship and space combat with some truly breathtaking 3D graphics, you can put to rest any assumptions that this game is merely a hastily put together slop-job aimed at cashing in on the popularity of the TV franchise.
It’s indeed, much, much more than that and credit certainly must be given to the developers for crafting such a finely made and true-and-loyal-to-the-canon MMO game.
Gameplay
Not only are there multiple ships to command (both Human and Cylon), but there also exists a vast plethora of different upgrades and customization choices as well. And this also goes for your character (like any good MMO worth at all its mettle) as well. There are a vast multitude of varied customized class choices for you to pursue for your character also, ultimately allowing you to create your ideal character that you always fantasized about while watching the show.
The space and spaceship combat is just as fast and frenzied as you’d expect from watching the show, truly highlighting the best part of the game easily. Although this isn’t to take anything away from the rest of the game as, overall, it’s simply highly polished and ridiculously entertaining to play.
And don’t worry if you’ve never seen an episode of the show then you can believe this Battlestar Galactica review when we tell you that you don’t have to be privy to the show (or show’s plural, rather) canon to enjoy your time with Battlestar Galactica Online. Although you’re very likely to probably start watching the show as a result of playing the game as this has been the documented case with the majority of instances if online reports are believed to be true. There’s become a small army of new Battlestar fans as a result of this excellent MMO.
Features
There are a ton of different features that make Battlestar Galactica Online not only one of the most unique MMO’s on the market, but also one of the best. And since it’s the job of this Battlestar Galactica review to explain why, we’ll get right into it.
The chief among them – and one that surprised many people when the game was first released because of the sheer breadth of content and extra time it must have taken building in a whole other side to play the game – is the option to play the game as either Cylons or Humans. Combining this with the state-of-the-art graphics that are available playing the game within your browser window – and the simple convenience of this – is yet another key feature that has many fans of the game raving and signing its praises.
Despite some extra add-on options if you wish to pay, the vast, vast majority of Battlestar Galactica Online is completely free to play. Yes, there are some ads at some points during the login and main game menu, but nothing that takes away the sheer immersion the game provides.
And as we’ve stated, not only is the space and spaceship combat completely fantastic, but there’s practically a whole strategic system of offensive and defensive maneuvers built-in to appeal and satisfy even the most staunch of strategy-game purists.
As if the features list couldn’t get any bigger, there are a metric shit-ton of story-based missions that not only build upon the canon that was established in the several iterations of the show, but also many who expand and build-upon things that weren’t touched on very much or at all. The character and spaceship progression is varied and a treat to customize and you never truly feel as if you’re slaving away just to get to the next level. Indeed, level-up indicators often come as a pleasant surprise most of the time!
Bottom Line
All in all, with practically the entire universe of Battlestar Galactica characters built into the game story-wise and NPC-wise, Battlestar Galactica Online is easily one of the best MMO’s out there on the market today. To say that it is free to boot is just the final icing that’s needed on the cake.
And as we said, you don’t need to be a fan of the Battlestar Galactica show to enjoy Battlestar Galactica Online, but if you are a fan of the show – well… you simply have to play this game. To call it the best free MMORPG on the market today very well wouldn’t be a stretch. It will most certainly go down in history as one of the best MMORPG games ever created. That much you can take to the bank.
As for the best ever… well…
There are some minor glitches and bugs still existing in the game, but the developers Quality Assurance team is constantly issuing and implementing new patches to iron out these things and the game is only getting better and better and more polished as time goes by. It’s unlikely you haven’t heard about Battlestar Galactica Online in some way from friends, family or online, but if you haven’t then you can officially consider this your lucky day and start counting those lucky stars as you’ve certainly stumbled upon something special.
We don’t usually gush this much about the free MMORPGs that we review but we just can’t help ourselves when it comes to Battlestar Galactica Online. And we’re not even fans of the TV show (correction: we are now)!
We ultimately created this website to review the many different MMO games out there in order to highlight and put a spotlight on the ones that were truly great. And as it so happens, the ones that are truly great are oftentimes the ones that are overlooked or not in the mainstream (so to speak). A perfect example of this — that we’ve hopefully illustrated in this Battlestar Galactica review — is this online MMORPG.
Battlestar Galactica Online is just such a game. And you need to play it. Like… yesterday.
